Why would I need a Spot device when I already have a perfectly good GPS?

A GPS will tell you where you are going based on internal maps provided but it will only receive a GPS signal.  A Spot device will actually transmit your exact location within about 20 feet allowing you and your possessions to be found.

A cell phone or any kind of radio device operates by line of sight.  A Spot device operates via a network of satellites giving you a much broader location almost anyplace in the world regardless of whether there is a cell phone tower or not.  Simply put, Spot operates where cell phones do not.

All Spot devices work out of the box but registration is required (fees depend on service requested).  Most Spot devices require basic service which as of 1/11 is $100 per year.  Once you register the unit you will also have to complete your account information at www.findmespot.com which is done over the internet

The answer to this will vary by specific Spot device.  With Spot-2 you will get a total of (10) contacts for each of the "check OK" and "Help" but with Spot Connect in conjunction with your Smarphone you will get (10) Groups and each one of the groups can have up to (50) contacts so you could have up to (500) contacts for each of the "check OK" as well as "Help".  Whether you have Spot-2 or Spot Connect you will also have an interface to Facebook, Twitter, and Spot Adventures so in reality if you get creative your number of recipients can be virtually limitless.

Once I have set up my contacts and completed registration of my Spot, can I go back and change anything?

Absolutely, all you need to do is log back to your master account your particular Spot device and make whatever changes you wish as many times as you wish and just as often as you wish as there is no limitation.

If I push "911" or SOS botton, can I cancel the call?

Yes.  Just push "911" again and it will quit blinking.

Will Spot work in Alaska?

Yes.Coverage includes virtually all of both North and South America.  Transmission in the northern extremes of Alaska may be a bit slower but Spot will continue to make attempts at transmission.  Unlike cellular phone service which you either have or don't have, satellite service is broad and will continue attempt transmission until a satellite is located.  Overall, Spot enjoys over 99% successful transmission rate.
