A GPS will tell you where you are going based on maps provided but it will only receive information. SPOT will send your exact location allowing you or your possessions to be found.

Why won't a cell phone do the same thing?

A cell phone or any kind of radio operates by line of sight. SPOT operates by 48 different satellites giving you a much broader location almost anyplace in the world. A cell phone can not give your precise location . SPOT can locate you within approximately 20 feet.

It will operate out of the box which includes 2 lithium ion batteries. Registration of the product is required at a cost of $100. Registration is required so SPOT will know who to contact in an emergency and for your service to be activated. SPOT also comes with an optional tracking capability at a cost of $50 per year which allows others to tract you on the internet.

You are allowed up to 10 email contacts at time of your registration.  These email contacts will receive an email for either "OK" or "Need Help".

Will Spot work in Alaska?
